What is the Microbiota?

The Microbiota is the name given to a population of microorganisms that live in our gut.

There are millions of beneficial bacteria harmless, which, every day, and play a key role in your digestion and the body's defense against bacterial pathogens.

The balance of the Microbiota can be affected during the aging process and as a consequence, the older people have a Microbiota that is different from the young people and adults.

The composition of the Microbiota that is, as a rule, similar to the one in the majority of healthy individuals, but it is the variable that is largely determined by the environment and our diet.

Some of the main functions of the Microbiota are:

  • To help the body to digest certain foods that the stomach and the small intestine were not able to digest, such as in the extraction of energy and nutrients, such as short chain fatty acids, and amino acids from food.
  • To assist in the production of vitamins B and K
  • To prevent the growth of bacteria, pathogens, and harmful to the body.
  • It plays an important role in the immune system as well as forming a protective barrier.

It can be the result of changes in the Microbiota, due to the variation of various environmental factors, including diet, toxins, drugs, and pathogenic micro-organisms. All of these factors, the micro-organisms and pathogens are likely to cause disbioses.

The disbioses, also referred to as disbacterioses is a term used to describe the imbalance of the gut.

This disbioses mainly affect the gastrointestinal tract, and they are potentially related to an increasing number of diseases, and are increasingly being studied, the relationship between these diseases and Microbiota balance.

The cause of the disbioses?

There are many potential causes for a disbiose intestinal tract in general.

Some of these disbioses can be caused by:

  • The use of antibiotics when antibiotics are used they are disposed of much of the beneficial bacteria such as those of the harmful influence of the balance of the intestinal flora
  • Diet is unbalanced loads: a diet that is low in fiber, with a high content in fats and proteins, it may reduce the motility of the bowel and lead to an imbalance in the gut
  • Environmental factors: water and food contamination, exposure to chemicals, and heavy metals.
